Primary Food vs. secondary Food

Primary Food

Today, I took the day off, to spend time with one of my dearest friends because I’ve been noticing that I really need to give more of my energy to other areas of my life that really nourish me. I love what I do so much that sometimes I neglect other important areas of my life that fulfill me as well. I apply a concept in my health coaching practice called primary food vs. secondary food. I also apply this to my personal life. When I work with women who want to lose weight, I find that when they are feeling unfulfilled, overwhelmed or stressed out, in other areas of their lives, their food choices are less healthy and they either gain or have difficulty losing weight. Areas of your life that are not related to food are called primary food because when you feel emotionally nourished and fulfilled in most or all areas of your lives, you tend to lose weight easily and naturally want to make better food choices; choosing food that nourishes you and make you feel good. Some examples of primary foods are relationships, self-care, sleep, spiritual practice, career, education, joy, and creativity. What are some areas of your life you’d like to feel more fulfilled in and what steps can you take to make that happen? Feel free to share here.
